Learning Outcome Checker

Paste your course learning outcomes, one per line. The checker looks the verb up in the approved Bloom dictionary and shows its level; it flags unobservable verbs, sentences with two verbs and sentences that describe the teacher rather than the student. The text never leaves your browser.

    What is checked?

    The checker's five rules

    1. Approved verbThe verb must be in the Bloom dictionary; the level is read from the verb. A verb outside the dictionary has no identifiable level.
    2. Observable verbVerbs such as know, understand, grasp and learn cannot be observed in an exam; use define, explain or calculate instead.
    3. Single verb“Calculates and interprets” is two separate outcomes. If one is achieved and the other is not, the result is unclear.
    4. Student-centredSentences such as “is taught” or “is explained” describe what the teacher will do; an outcome says what the student will do.
    5. Level balanceOutcomes should not pile up at one level; each level calls for a different assessment method.

To rewrite an outcome use the Learning Outcome Builder; to choose a verb, the Bloom's Taxonomy Verb Dictionary.

    Frequently asked questions

    About checking learning outcomes

What does the checker look at?

It treats each line as one learning outcome and checks five things: whether the verb is in the approved Bloom dictionary and at which level; whether a verb to avoid (know, understand, grasp) is used; whether the sentence has two verbs; whether it describes what the teacher will do; and whether it is passive. Finally it shows how the outcomes are distributed across levels.

What should I do if it says the verb was not found?

If the verb is not in the dictionary, its level cannot be determined. For Turkish outcomes, put the verb at the end of the sentence and choose it from the Bloom verb dictionary. Your institution's dictionary may be larger; this tool uses the default dictionary.

Can I check outcomes written in English?

Yes. In an English outcome the verb comes first (Explain, Design); the tool looks at the first words and matches them with the English equivalents in the dictionary.

What should the level distribution look like?

Introductory courses may lean on remember, understand and apply; in upper-year courses the share of outcomes at analyse, evaluate and create should increase. Gathering all outcomes at one level narrows the scope of the course.

    Is what I type saved?

No. The checker runs entirely in your browser; the text you paste is not sent to the server and is deleted when you close the page.

Run this check automatically in every course

In SixBloom Course Design Studio, verbs are not typed freely but chosen from the dictionary; the questions that measure an outcome are checked against the same level.
